Starting a CPA Practice

Starting a business of any kind can seem like an overwhelming endeavor for even a seasoned professional in the field. But some of the basic things to consider in starting and running a business, such as building a business plan, knowing your financial requirements, understanding your technology needs, and what to charge for services - to name a few, can pose a unique challenge to the individual wishing to start and run a CPA practice.

To help the aspiring sole practitioner or small firm owner address some of these start-up considerations (as they relate to a CPA practice) PCPS has developed a planning checklist and applicable resources to provide guidance through the start up process and give answers to the questions one might face in setting out on such an endeavor.

The AICPA Management of an Accounting Practice (MAP) Handbook is a great resource for all of your CPA Firm administrative needs. Chapter 102, "Starting a Practice," provides information on launching a practice. Several of the resources provided for this section were excerpted from the AICPA MAP Handbook © 2007 AICPA.  Subscriptions to the MAP Handbook (in print or online) can be purchased by PCPS members at a substantial discount.  In fact, the savings alone pays for the PCPS membership.  The AICPA MAP Handbook is available in text and electronic versions.  Click here to see how to join PCPS and what the benefits and requirements are.
